Adult Learning Center

The mission of the Hostos Adult Learning Center is to provide adults with another chance to build their basic skills and connect to future educational opportunities and employment. For men and women who have not completed high school and/or are in need of building their English language skills, instruction at the ALC seeks to offer students an opportunity to build a strong academic foundation and supplies them with the tools to strengthen their basic educational skills while participating in interesting, fun and relevant learning experiences. We invite you to join the thousands of others who have enjoyed the supportive atmosphere and academic excellence that have made the ALC such a special place.

Program Information

  • Must be 19 years of age or older
  • Classes meet between two (2) to four (4) days a week
  • Morning and evening classes available
  • All classes are FREE

High School Equivalency Diploma

  • Preparation for the New York State High School Equivalency Diploma examination.
  • Focus on improving writing skills, critical thinking, and reading comprehension skills in the areas of science, social studies, and language arts.
  • Students must achieve a minimum score of 9.0 grade equivalency on the placement test.

Basic Education

  • For those students who need to improve basic reading, reading comprehension, and writing skills.
  • Focus on increasing these basic skills while developing critical thinking and reasoning skills.
  • This course is offered in English and Spanish.
  • Students must achieve a minimum score of 5.0 grade equivalency on the placement test.

Math

  • For those students who need to improve basic mathematics skills.
  • Topics covered: basic arithmetic, data, algebra, and geometry.
  • Advanced level math will include test-taking strategies for the GED exam.
  • Assessment test will determine class placement.

English as a Second Language

  • Designed to help speakers of other languages to speak, read, and write in English.
  • Focus will be on strengthening pronunciation, building fluency, and improving communication.
  • Various reading and writing activities will help students build their English literacy skills, introduce new vocabulary and basic English grammar, and ultimately, improve students’ ability to understand written English.
