Program Review

In Fall 2013, Hostos Community College unveiled its college-wide Institutional Assessment Plan. The overall goal of the plan is to create an integrated assessment system that will permit Hostos to improve teaching and learning, organizational effectiveness and accountability, and provide data that is used for planning and resource allocation. Hostos is conducting its assessments at three levels: institutional, program, and course.

The Program Review process (part of the program level of assessment) is split into 2 parts:
  1. Academic Program Review (APR) - which studies the effectiveness and efficiency of the college's credit-bearing academic programs/units and
  2. Non-Academic Program Review (Non-APR) - which studies the effectiveness and efficiency of the college's individual offices, programs, and units that are not necessarily academic in nature.
Results from the review process inform program assessment, as well as resource planning and allocation for individual programs.  Overall, the results provide information about institutional effectiveness.

Academic Program Review (APR)

APR is a study of program/unit effectiveness that goes beyond the assessment of student learning to examine:

  • administrative effectiveness,
  • relevance of course offerings to industry standards,
  • instructional and student support services, and
  • adequacy of faculty and staff.

This process (and culminating report) are intended to provide departments/units/programs with an opportunity to review and reflect on the totality of their work over the course of the past several academic years.  It is also a time for the department, as a group, to identify their strengths and weaknesses and to begin to plan the future direction(s) of the department.

Non-Academic Program Review (Non-APR)

Similarly, Non-APR is a study of individual offices, programs, or initiatives that are not specifically academic in nature to assess:
  • operational effectiveness and efficiency, and
  • impact on student success.
