To the Hostos Family:

Welcome back to Hostos Community College for the spring semester.  I hope that the new year brings both new hope and renewed enthusiasm for the year ahead.

As we begin the new semester, we have the opportunity to welcome new students, renew acquaintances, and celebrate our accomplishments.  This spring, we look forward to the expansion of the CUNY Fatherhood Academy, an initiative in partnership with the Mayor’s Office designed to strengthen families by teaching responsible parenting, economic stability and life skills to young fathers.  Our IT Department has launched the “myHostosApp” giving students access to College resources in the way many of us have come to access information, through smartphones.

As I mentioned at our State of the College address, we are redoubling our efforts in those areas identified as major priorities in our strategic plan: student retention, developmental education, student support services and workforce development.  In addition to the support we have received from the University to advance our agenda, we will be working with the leadership of the institution to develop specific strategies to address these major College goals.  Finally, as both a symbol of rebirth and an outgrowth of our Food Studies initiative, the Farmer’s Market will be returning to the Grand Concourse offering healthy food options for our community.

We are fortunate to be in an institution where the commitment and talent of our faculty, the passion and dedication of our students and the perseverance and determination of our staff combine to make this a wonderful environment where we can all learn and grow.  I invite you, if you haven’t done so already, to take advantage of this extraordinary opportunity to engage our students and your colleagues.

Nelson Mandela once observed that, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” With the Hostos community, I am confident that we will use this power wisely.

Welcome back!

David Gómez, Ed.D.
