Basketball player Jemal Smith
Hostos standout basketball player Jemal Smith has earned a full scholarship to play for the Virginia Union University Panthers. Smith will enter VUU as a junior.

Smith, a 5-9, 175-lb. guard, closed out his Hostos career in stellar fashion, receiving NJCAA First-Team All-American honors. The 2016-17 CUNYAC and Region XV Player of the Year averaged 19.1 points, 11.0 assists, 4.3 steals, and 3.2 rebounds per game.

In his two-year career, he accumulated 1,103 points (the most in Caiman history), 196 steals and 166 rebounds.

Virginia Union plays in Division II of the NCAA Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
