Hostos Helps Marathoners Reach Finish Line

Nine Hostos students, along with Hostos staff members, volunteered in support of the New York City Marathon on November 5. They offered water and cheered them on, helping them to the finish line. The activity was part of Hostos’ “50 Acts of Kindness” to commemorate the College’s year-long 50th anniversary celebration.

The students were Adalgisa Suárez, Kalia Garbutt, Candace Miranda, Nichole Johnson, Nikora McDonald, Julio Benites, and Luisa Bran. The staff members were Melanie García and Tanya Navarro.

Hostos Gives Back on Thanksgiving

In the spirit of communal giving back, the Hostos family joined with the nonprofit “God’s Love We Deliver” on Thanksgiving to deliver nutritious, individually-tailored meals to people who are too sick to shop or cook for themselves.

The meals were prepared and delivered to Hostos, where they were packed up for delivery. Melanie García, who works for Hostos’ Division for Continuing Education and Workforce Development, has volunteered with the organization for eight years—on both Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve—and helped secure Hostos as a distribution site this year. Hostos staff, including Public Safety Officers Raymundo Valentin, Elma Valdez, along with staff Diana Kreymer, Ruby Calle and others, who delivered to nearly 230 patients.

About “God’s Love We Deliver”

Founded in 1985 when one woman began delivering food on her bicycle to a man dying from AIDS, God's Love now cooks 6,600 meals each weekday, delivering them to clients living with life-altering illnesses in all five boroughs of New York City, Westchester and Nassau Counties, and Hudson County, New Jersey. All of our services are provided free of charge to our clients, their children and to the senior caregivers of our senior clients, without regard to income, and we have never maintained a waiting list. Because we believe the combination of hunger and serious illness is a crisis, we deliver food within 24 – 48 hours of first being contacted.
