Hostos Adjunct Professor Alida Camacho has dedicated decades of her life battling the issue of domestic violence. That hard work was recognized with a 2017 Advocates of NYC Award on October 17.

Because October was Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence featured heroes of the domestic violence advocacy community. Camacho certainly met that criteria, having provided services to victims for 34 years.

Camacho, an Adjunct Sociology Professor at Hostos working toward her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, was the Director of Hostos’ Domestic Violence Empowerment Program (DoVE) from 2006 to 2015. Hostos’ Health and Wellness Center continues to provide domestic violence services for students, faculty and staff and is committed to promoting and enhancing healthy life styles, healthy relationships, emotional, and spiritual wellness of students.

“Here at Hostos, we all work together to create a culture that is educated about domestic violence and one that provides support to our students,” Camacho said. “I would like to thank Hostos’ Director of Health and Wellness Services, Fabian Wander, the rest of my team, as well as the entire Hostos campus, for their dedication to helping students involved in domestic violence.”
