Hostos Student Leaders Isela Herrera and Joel AvendanoHostos Student Leaders Isela Herrera and Joel Avendano along with Nathaniel Cruz, Vice President for Student Development and Enrollment Management (SDEM) took part in the celebration for Dia de los Muertos at St. Mary’s Park held on Saturday, October 26th.

The event was sponsored by New York City Park’s and Coalition Mexicana and celebrated the traditional Mexican Day of the Dead with live music, traditional dance and a parade. Calaveras Literaris (poetry readings), community altars, art workshops and other celebratory artistic activities.

Students also had the opportunity to discuss the importance of the community and celebration with Melissa Mark-Viverito, Speaker of the New York City Council; Fernando Cabrera, Council Member for the 14th District of the New York City Council; Ambassador Diego Gomez Pickering, Consul General of Mexico to New York City; and Jairo Guzman, President of the Mexican Coalition for the Empowerment of Youth and Families, Inc.

During the day’s festivities Bronx 12 was in attendance and spoke with both Herrera and Avendano about the importance of the event to the community.
