Yankees’ slugger Carlos Beltrán Aida Basse (Nursing); Perla Hidalgo Santos (Liberal Arts); Bassirimah Dembele (Civil Engineering); Moumouni Hassane (Business Management); Angel Jefferson (Business Management); and Maria Roa (Civil Engineering).

Six Hostos students became academic all-stars when they each received $5,000 scholarships from Yankees’ slugger Carlos Beltrán at the Third Annual Carlos Beltrán Foundation Gala held on June 22 at Gotham Hall.

This year’s awardees were: Aida Basse (Nursing); Perla Hidalgo Santos (Liberal Arts); Bassirimah Dembele (Civil Engineering); Moumouni Hassane (Business Management); Angel Jefferson (Business Management); and Maria Roa (Civil Engineering). Each student enjoyed the opportunity to thank the Yankees all-star in person. They were also extremely surprised, as the awards were not officially announced until the night of the event.

Hostos’ Director for the Center for Bronx Nonprofits Eileen Newman attended the event and lauded both the work of the Carlos Beltrán Foundation, the students, and the special partnership. Carlos Beltrán Scholarships, which were created in 2014 at Hostos, are aimed at helping students achieve their academic goals and help make them leaders in their communities. To date, the awards have supported 16 academically eligible full-time students who demonstrate financial need.

Beltrán’s gala — a baseball-themed event “Let’s Score!” — benefited the Carlos Beltrán Foundation, which helps promote health, fitness and education for children from low- income families.
