Eugenio María de Hostos Community College (CUNY) prides itself on offering curriculum that best prepares its students, and the College is pleased to announce new programs and services for Fall 2016.

To equip students for careers in law enforcement, a new Associate in Science (A.S.) in Police Science degree program is being offered. The curriculum examines the major role of policing in the United States and will educate individuals to become meaningfully employed in state, county, local and uniformed federal law enforcement agencies. The courses provide specialized concentrations in the role of police and the community, their structure, as well as issues affecting law enforcement today.

Students completing the Police Science sequence will also be prepared to transfer to a four-year college to pursue a bachelor’s of science degree at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in Police Studies.

“It remains our responsibility and mission to adapt our educational and training offerings with the changes that we see in the community around us,” Hostos President Dr. David Gómez said. “By constantly evaluating and expanding our curriculum, we are better preparing our students to have a positive impact on not only their lives, but the communities in our region and beyond.”

Addressing the important role food plays in nutrition and other aspects of the South Bronx, Hostos continues to build its interdisciplinary Associate in Science (A.S.) in Food Studies degree program. Now students can earn a degree in four tracks of study—political science (food policy); urban/social studies (social issues); health and nutrition (health and nutrition); and environmental studies (environment and sustainability)—designed to prepare students to transfer into related four-year degree programs. Certificate programs also will be offered.

New offerings from within Hostos’ Workforce Development’s Construction Industry certificate programs are also being offered. The Basic Property Management Certificate Program is geared toward individuals that are involved in or interested in construction and development and real estate management industries, and the Basic Construction Project Management Certificate Program explores the construction project management field with a concentration on basic construction methods, renovation, planning, and real estate development. Both allow students to acquire academic credits upon completion of the workforce courses with certification and entry into an academic program.

“Through careful planning and preparation, Hostos has taken another step forward academically,” Hostos Provost Christine Mangino said. “Whether it is through new classes, technology, or dynamic support programs, our aim is to ensure that our students are well-supported and prepared to excel academically and within their careers.”

Recently, Hostos became one of 67 campuses to be selected to pilot the U.S. Department of Education’s Second Chance Pell Grant Pilot Program to enroll incarcerated students in educational and training programs. Hostos is also part of a new CUNY consortium that is sharing an Open Educational Resources (OER) grant. The funding will provide free digital and interactive open educational resources, such as open courseware, which is expected to save students 80 to 100 percent of the costs of textbooks over the next few years. With approximately 500 students enrolled in the degree program, the potential savings through these modern teaching tools will be substantial.
