Friday, January 31, 2014 (Bronx, NY) - Hostos Community College President Félix V. Matos Rodríguez joined a prestigious group of CEOs and other community and business leaders on January 31, 2014, at the White House for an important “Opportunity for All” summit, hosted by President Barack Obama aimed at helping the long-term unemployed.
"I'm honored to be part of this White House summit on helping the long-term unemployed. Hostos is located in a community with close to a 14 percent unemployment rate, which is double the national average,” said Matos Rodríguez. “We are committed to continuing to partner with our local and regional businesses to help them identify and hire well-trained workers. We commend President Obama, Governor Cuomo, Mayor de Blasio, and Bronx Borough President Díaz, Jr. for their efforts, as we pledge to continue our efforts to expand our workforce training partnerships and programs."
Today’s important event was attended by CEOs from some of the nation’s largest companies who agreed to take steps to help give the long-term unemployed a fair shot at a job, and will announce new steps to expand partnerships that connect the long-term unemployed to good jobs.
President Matos Rodríguez also attended a similar summit at the White House on January 16, 2014, with other university presidents and leaders from nonprofits, foundations, state governments and businesses across the country on increasing support for low-income college students.
