Biography

The appointment of Mr. Nathaniel Cruz at Vice President for Student Development and Enrollment Management (SDEM) at Eugenio María de Hostos Community College was confirmed by the Board of Trustees of The City University of New York on June 27, 2011.  Having served as Interim Vice President of this division since April 28, 2009, Mr. Cruz was instrumental in stabilizing SDEM in a time of transition, fiscal deficits, and personnel changes.

During Mr. Cruz’ tenure as Interim Vice President, he provided oversight for a division that reached major milestones that included historically high enrollments, multiple funding of divisional grants, enhanced infusion of auxiliary revenue streams, increase
in freshmen retention rates, advanced use of technologies and internal marketing strategies, timely delivery of enrollment services, and improved student satisfaction ratings for student support services, to name a few. During a Year of Assessment,
Mr. Cruz also positioned the Division to optimize resources for professional develop-ment opportunities and increase the use of national standards in assessment.

During his thirty years of combined administrative and executive-level experience in higher education and in serving students, faculty and staff of Hostos Community College and constituents of the Mott Haven “South Bronx” community, he has advanced collaborations with the Division of Academic Affairs and fostered partnerships in the community. His responsibilities include oversight of financial aid, registrar, academic achievement, admissions, athletics, student leadership, student activities, student life, veterans’ affairs, wellness, health services, counseling, Single Stop USA, SDEM institutional technology support, SDEM institutional research, college discovery, transfer, evening and weekend, disabilities, and career services, including the supervision of the dean of enrollment and dean of students.

Mr. Cruz’ professional experience at the College includes serving as tutor in the English Department, financial aid counselor, senior financial aid counselor, assistant director of financial aid, special projects manager at the Dean of Students’ Office, associate dean of students, interim director of counseling, dean of students, and interim vice president for student development and enrollment management. His experience extends beyond the executive level, having participated and contributed in various governance capa-cities as a member of the PSC-CUNY HEO Delegate Assembly, Board member for
the PSC Federal Credit Union, and the Hostos College-Wide Senate. His current professional memberships include NASPA - Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, the American Student Conduct Association, the National Conference on Ethics at West Point Military Academy, the National Junior Community College Athletic Association, and the Hostos College Association Board.

Mr. Cruz received his bachelor’s degree in Comparative Literature from Herbert H. Lehman College/CUNY and his graduate degree in Higher Education Administration from Bernard M. Baruch College/CUNY.
