Mission Statement
The Facilities/Building & Grounds department of
Hostos Community College is committed to providing its faculty,
staff, and students with facilities that are safe, clean, and well
maintained. We will make every effort to provide a healthy
environment that is conducive to learning and supports the mission
of our institution.
Overview
The Campus Planning & Operations department is headed by the Associate Dean for Campus Planning & Operations, who reports directly to the Sr. Vice President for Administration and Finance. The department is made up of the Campus Planning, Building & Grounds and Health & Safety units. Campus Planning deals directly with capital projects; Building & Grounds deals with maintenance, housekeeping and engineering (utilities); and, Health and Safety with environmental issues, EPA compliance, Right to Know Training and other health and safety related issues. The Building & Grounds department is overseen by two Administrative Superintendents – the Chief Administrative Superintendent, F. Virone directly supervises our Maintenance and Engineering staff and the Administrative Superintendent, J. Globerman, oversees the housekeeping staff. This department provides its services to over 700,000 G.S.F. of buildings on over 5 acres of land. Our campus consists of 5 permanent and 2 temporary buildings – Allied Health building (a.k.a. Building “A”) located at 475 Grand Concourse; 500 Grand Concourse building (a.k.a. Building “B”); East Academic Complex building (a.k.a. Building “C”) located at 450 Grand Concourse; Savoy Manor building (a.k.a. Building “D”) located at 120 E. 149th Street; 135 E. 146th Street (a.k.a. 471 Walton Avenue or Building”G”); 427 Walton Avenue (a.k.a. Trailer Site #5); and, 121 E. 146th Street (a.k.a. Trailer Site #6).
The following is a brief description of each of the areas that comprise this department:
Campus Planning
This area deals with all Capital Budget Requests – Borough President and City Council; Capital Construction Projects; the preparation and submission of the College’s 5 Year Capital Construction Plan; Master Plan development and implementation; and, issues involving existing facilities and space utilization.
Maintenance
This area consists of Maintenance Workers and Skilled Trades personnel (Electricians, Plumbers, Painters and Carpenters) and deals with the general maintenance of all campus buildings. This area is staffed from 7 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Requests for the services provided by this area can be made using our web-based Work Order system.
Housekeeping (Custodial)
This area is responsible for the overall cleaning of all buildings including sidewalks and parking lots. In addition to the housekeeping staff there are Laborers that handle grounds maintenance and the moving/relocation of furniture and heavy equipment and the set ups for the events that occur throughout the campus. Housekeeping services are provided Monday through Friday from 8 AM – Midnight and Saturday from 9:30 AM to 6 PM. During the fall/winter months – October through May, a third shift, from 11:30 PM – 8 AM, is added. Requests for the services provided by this area can be made using our web-based Work Order system.
Engineering (Utilities)
This area of the department is responsible for the maintenance and operation of all heating, ventilation, air conditioning, elevators and all other major building operating systems. Coverage is provided from 5:30 AM to 11 PM Monday through Friday and Saturday from 7 AM – 7 PM. The function of this area is to provide the College community with a comfortable, healthy and safe environment in which to work.
Health & Safety
This area is headed by the College’s Health and Safety Officer. This person is responsible for ensuring that all OSHA rules and regulations are adhered to; provides training to all College faculty and staff in the areas of Right to Know and hazardous material handling; maintains compliance with all EPA regulations; oversees the contracts dealing with medical, hazardous and chemical waste removal to ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies; and, addresses all health and safety concerns of faculty, staff and students.
