What is CLIP?
The CUNY
Language Immersion Program
(CLIP) offers you the
opportunity to study English
for an intensive period of
time before you enroll in
formal college courses. This
program includes classroom
instruction, computer-assisted
learning, tutoring, books and
other materials, college
orientation and advisement.
Because of the intensity of
the language instruction (25
hours a week), students do not
take additional college course
work while they are attending
the Language Immersion
Program.
Who
may attend the program?
The
Hostos-CLIP Program is
recommended for entering
freshmen who have already been
admitted to a CUNY college and
who need additional English as a
Second Language classes prior to
entering college. CLIP is also
for students who have not been
successful in their college ESL
courses (did not pass one
semester of ESL at the community
college level or failed the same
ESL course two times at a senior
college).
When do classes meet?
Classes
meet 5 hours a day Monday
through Friday. We have day and
evening schedules as follows:
DAY: 9:00
AM to 2:30 PM
EVENING:
5:00 PM to 10:00 PM
In the
summer, we have a four day
schedule, from 9:00 AM to 7:00
PM.
How
long can I stay in the Language
Immersion Program?
You can
enroll in the program for up to
one year or remain one cycle
only. This is a decision made
jointly by the student and the
instructor. There are 3 cycles
of classes at CLIP each year,
two sessions of 15 weeks each
(in fall and spring), and a
6-week cycle in the summer.
Students are given the Freshman
Skills Assessment Test before
living CLIP so that they will be
placed in the appropriate
classes when they return to
their college.
Will I have to use my financial
aid to pay for the Language
Immersion Program?
No. During
your time in the program, you
will not be using
your financial aid.
