Commencement 2010

"We come from the same background, we have lived many of the same struggles, and we have faced many of the same challenges that you have faced. We know the powerful promise of growth and advancement that motivated each of you graduates at every step along your path towards this moment. From these experiences, we have shared a sense of pride and hard work and a common belief in education as a means of self and community improvement."
Justice Sonia Sotomayor to the Hostos graduating class of June 2010

Welcome to the Photo Album of Hostos Community College's 39th Commencement Ceremony!

On Friday, June 4, 2010, more than 300 Hostos students received their degrees and certificates in a memorable ceremony held in the college's Main Theater.  Among many notable guests in attendance were Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr., Congressman José E. Serrano, CUNY Chancellor Matthew Goldstein, and Mr. Philip Alfonso Berry, Vice Chairman of the CUNY Board of Trustees who offered some inspirational words. The commencement address was delivered by the Honorable Sonia Sotomayor, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Justice Sotomayor reminded the graduates of their shared backgrounds and congratulated them on their achievements. She was accompanied by her mother Celina Sotomayor, a 1973 graduate of the Hostos nursing program.

On the same day, the college also celebrated my investiture at the college's sixth president. I consider it a great honor and a real privilege to work for the fulfillment of the mission of Hostos.

We hope you will enjoy the memories of a great day at Hostos that are captured in these pages.

Félix V. Matos Rodríguez, Ph.D.
