As part of the CUNY Dance Initiative, the acclaimed dancer/choreographer Malcolm Low leads his seven-member company for In The Thrust Towards the Future…I Want to Leave Something of Use. This seminal work is inspired by the Great Migration of African Americans in the United States from 1916 to 1970. Drawing on insights from writer James Baldwin and from Isabel Wilkerson’s The Warmth of Other Suns, the work uses two very different physicalities – African-American church and black social dance scenes, and the learned techniques of ballet and modern dance. Malcolm Low has performed with Les Ballets de Montreal, Ronald K. Brown, Stephen Petronio, Complexions, Reggie Wilson, and Bill T. Jones, among others.
