Applied Science and Technology Abstracts

Applied Science and Technology Abstracts covers every area of science, engineering and technology. Sources are indexed from 1983 on and include trade and industrial publications, journals issued by professional and technical societies, and specialized subject periodicals. Citations begin with 1983; Abstracts begin with 1994.


Academic Search Premier

Provides full text for nearly 3,200 multidisciplinary scholarly publications—from the humanities and ethnic studies to natural sciences.  It does include a fine collection of chemistry journals. Click here for a complete title list.


General Science Abstracts

General Science Abstracts indexes articles of at least one column in length from English language periodicals published in the United States and Great Britain plus the full text of selected periodicals beginning with 1984. Topics include Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Conservation, Earth Science, Environment, Health, Mathematics, Medicine, Nutrition, and Physics. Abstracting coverage begins with periodicals published in March 1993.


Dialog@CARL Science Databases

Collection of 300 databases covering news, business, reference, arts, humanities, social sciences, government, science, technology, medicine, and intellectual property. Over half of the databases offer full-text articles. The Science files include databases in the following areas:  Astronomy, Mathematics, Physics, Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Geology, Geophysics, Marine Science, Meteorology, Natural Resources, Nuclear Science, Pollution, Water and Water, Quality & Zoology.


DPAC, the online catalog of all materials owned by CUNY libraries, is a part of the university wide information system known as CUNY+.  Use DPAC to search for books, periodicals, databases, or videos. All science books owned by Baruch can be found by searching DPAC.

Hostos Subscription Research Databases

The Research Databases page of the Hostos Library provides a gateway to all of the library's subscription databases and information services. These services can be accessed from any Internet-connected workstation on the Hostos campus. Hostos Faculty and students can access most of these services from home via the Off Campus Access link. A virtual chemistry textbook for introductory chemistry. Created by a team of New York high school teachers for a Think Quest contest, this site provides very clear definitions and explanations of chemistry basics-- Symbols, Formulas, Measurements, Dimensional Analysis. Sections on Atoms and Molecules, States of Matter, Chemical Reactions, Atomic Structure, Energy and more are well organized and straightforward. A good study guide.

Chemistry Tutor

Sponsored by Think Quest, a collection of educational web sites designed by teachers and students in the Think Quest Contests, this site is designed to help students get through their chemistry homework. If you left your chemistry textbook at home or on the subway, this is the place you'll want to come. Offers a basic introduction to chemistry, chemical equations and reactions, and chemistry calculators as well as safety rules to follow when you are in the laboratory.

Chem 101

A chemistry text book online that starts with basic principles of chemistry and then moves to chapters on advanced basics, chemical bonding, periodic table of elements, thermodynamics, reactions, equilibrium, and acids. There are also 21 lab experiments you can try to test your understanding. Another Think Quest sponsored project created by teachers and students.


Hyper Chemistry on the Web

Unlike most other chemistry sites, this one includes a brief history of the science. It includes the usual features, such as an interactive periodic table as well as other unusual resources. Thirty-four well presented and clear experiments are presented.


General Chemistry I: A Virtual Textbook

Developed by a Florida State chemistry professor, this site contains material relating to a first semester undergraduate course in general chemistry. Include practice homework, exams, lecture notes and useful tables.


Sciences Explorer

A Think Quest project whose mission is to "create an educational learning experience in the field of science while maximizing the fun, excitement, and innovation all through the internet." The explorer is divided  into four major parts:  Math, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Each provides study tools, links, and resources. The unique feature of this site is that it is available in 4 languages: English, French, Spanish and Italian.


Unit Converter

This tool is a program based on conversion factor constants for converting one unit to another in chemistry. To find the equivalent value of any inputted values in different units, input the value of the measurement and then select the base units to the right of it.


World Chemistry

Basic resource that includes a quick ready reference guide to chemical terms, interactive tutorials with animations, FAQs, collections of interactive molecular models, periodic tables, and a chat room. Free membership. Although a commercial site, it had won many awards and had a variety of useful tools.



Freeware program for the beginning chemistry student. Current version includes an interactive periodic table, conversion charts, and much more. A message from the creator: "Chem-It is a program for the novice Chemistry student. I always found that I could never get everything together when I was doing my Chem problem sets. I'd always be juggling between the periodic table, conversion charts, and my laptop. Chem-It was designed in response to this problem.

Selected Classic Papers from the History of Chemistry

A collection of 133 seminal papers from the history of chemistry mounted by a team at Le Moyne College. Arranged in 10 categories, many papers include links to biographical data on the scientists. Additional resources such as a Glossary of Archaic Chemical Terms and links to the Internet Library of Early Journals in Oxford makes the sites especially useful.



A virtual community for chemists, ChemWeb provides centralized access to journals, databases, conference updates, and research. After free registration with ChemWeb, users may search through the online journals and access  Beilstein Abstracts, a database of titles and abstracts of close to 600,000 articles from 140 journals in organic and related chemistry. The articles run from 1980 to the present.


Berkeley Laboratory Isotopes Project's

Atoms and Isotopes presents a Periodic Table of the Isotopes. Choose an element to learn more about its isotopes. Includes a glossary of nuclear science terms.



The ChemFinder WebServer is a chemical database that provides  information that a general purpose WWW index cannot, including physical property data and 2D chemical structures. Also claims to have the largest single list of chemical information sites indexed in one place. Basic chemical data and structures are displayed with links to information found in supplier catalogs, MSDS and  regulatory databases. A commercially sponsored site, Chemfinder does support advertising.


Making Matter

This site illustrates the 3D structures of inorganic materials. Produced by produced by a French student, Marcus Hewat, during a summer student work experience, the site is used by scientists to study the atomic structure of materials. Terrific images and descriptions.

Supported by the Chemistry Division of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, this Periodic Table resources is searchable, includes an alphabetically list, instructions on how to use the table, and a tutorial quiz to test your knowledge and help you study.


A sophisticated interactive periodic table. Provides detailed information about the element of your choice. Aims to be a high quality source of information on the WWW relating  to the periodic table.



A chemical dictionary file hosted and supported by the National Institute of Health and the National Library of Medicine that includes over 339,000 compounds of biomedical and regulatory interest. Records include CAS Registry Numbers and other identifying numbers, molecular formulae, generic names, trivial names, other synonyms.

Understanding Our Planet through Chemistry

This U.S. Geological Survey site shows how chemists and geologists use analytical chemistry to: determine the age of the Earth; show an extraterrestrial body collided with the Earth; predict volcanic eruptions; observe atmospheric change over millions of years; and document damage by acid rain and pollution of the Earth's surface.


ABCs of Nuclear Science

Presents a brief introduction to Nuclear Science. The site examines Antimatter, Beta rays, Cosmic connection and much more, helping students understand radioactivity - alpha, beta and gamma decay; the difference between fission and fusion; the structure of the atomic nucleus and how elements on the earth were produced. How Many? A Dictionary of Units

Sponsored by the University of North Carolina,  this dictionary provides meanings, abbreviations, derivations, conversion factors, and definitions for hundreds of units of measure. Includes primers on international, mks, cgs, and English measurement systems. Written by Russ Rowlett, Director, Center for Mathematics and Science Education, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.


Academic Press Dictionary of Science and Technology

Contains over 130,000 terms defined in 130 fields of science. This free online scientific dictionary published by the Academic Press claims to be the largest English technical dictionary ever placed on the Web. Terms can be retrieved by keyword search or browsed alphabetically under specific categories.


Chemistry & Environmental Dictionary

Known as "YOGI'S Behemoth," this site provides chemistry, environmental and hazardous materials educational resources including a detailed periodic table of elements; articles on chemistry, environmental and  hazardous materials issues; a geologic timeline; and much more. It has been online since 1995 and was created by two individuals Kenneth and Roberta Barbalace while studying at the University of Alaska. They are responsible for content.


NIST Physical and Chemical Properties

Physical and Chemical Properties Division of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The Division is the Nation's reference laboratory for measurements, standards, data, and models for properties of gases, liquids, and solids; the rates and mechanisms of chemical reactions in the gas and liquid phases; and fluid based physical processes and systems. The site links to their Chemistry WebBook--gateway to the data collections of the NIST.
