           Hostos was an Antillian by genealogy, by thinking and by affect. He was a strong proponent of the idea of the Federation of the Antilles.  He concluded that such a federation was crucial to contain United States expansionism in the region, and to sustain the new Caribbean nations, which were bound by history and geography.

In the War of 1895 for Cuban Independence, organized by José Martí, an Antilleanist vision prevailed.  Many Puerto Ricans fought alongside the Cubans, and the commander of the revolutionary army was General Máximo Gómez, a Dominican.

            Hostos era un antillanista por la genealogía, por pensamiento y por sentimiento.  Fue un gran defensor de la idea de la Confederación de Las Antillas.  Llegó a la conclusión de que esa confederación era esencial para contener el expansionismo de los Estados Unidos en la región y para sostener a las nueva naciones caribeñas, que estaban enlazadas por factores históricos y geográficos.  Durante la Guerra de Independencia Cubana del 1895, organizada por José Martí, prevaleció una visión antillanista.  Muchos puertorriqueños lucharon junto a los cubanos en la manigua, y el comandante del ejército libertador fue un dominicano, el General Máximo Gómez.
