Hostos Wins Third Place in the 2011 Digital Community Colleges SurveyThursday, October 27, 2011 (Bronx, NY) - For two consecutive years Hostos Community College has been selected as a Top Digital Community College in the annual survey conducted by Converge Media. Hostos qualified in the Mid-Sized Colleges category based on number of students, estimated between 5,000 and 10,000 students, and placed 3rd amongst hundreds of participants.

“I’m very pleased with the recognition Converge Media has bestowed upon us as a result of the Digital Community College Survey. As our college grows, our various technology and leadership teams work tirelessly to stay current and continuously integrate new technologies across our academic and administrative areas. We are beginning to see positive outcomes and progress thanks to our great team and the fact that Hostos is leading on a national scale,” indicated Chief Information Officer and Assistant Vice President of Information Technology, Varun Sehgal.

The survey, conducted by Converge Media for over 10 years, documents internet technology services in community colleges and tracks trends in technology integration into college curriculums and campus life.
All U.S. community colleges are invited to participate in the Center for Digital Education survey. Selected institutions are recognized for the quality of service offerings to their faculty, staff, students and community.

The top colleges were honored at an awards reception in October during the League for Innovation’s annual conference. The leading colleges will also be featured on the Converge website.

About Hostos Community College
Eugenio María de Hostos Community College, part of The City University of New York system, was founded in 1968.  Located in the South Bronx, the college currently serves over 7,000 students.  In addition to associate degree programs that facilitate easy transfer to CUNY’s four-year colleges or baccalaureate studies at other institutions, Hostos also has an award-winning Continuing Education and Professional Studies Department that offers courses for professional development and certificate-bearing workforce training programs. In four decades, Hostos has grown from a class of 623 in the fall of 1970 to the spring 2010 enrollment of nearly 7,000 students.  The college also serves an additional 12,000 students through its Continuing Education and Professional Studies Department. Community Colleges on Front Lines of Digital Technology Recognized

Digital Community College Survey Winners!SACRAMENTO, Calif. Sept. 27, 2011 – e.Republic’s Center for Digital Education and Converge Online today announced winners in the seventh annual Digital Community Colleges Survey.  The survey documents advances made by community colleges in utilizing information technology and recognizes which colleges are providing a high level of service to their faculty, students, and communities as a result.

The survey looked at technology integration into college curriculum and campus life, documenting use of online admissions processes, distance education, technology training for students and faculty, campus security alerts, use of Web 2.0 social and collaborative capabilities as well as online tutoring and advisory services. Use of mobile devices was also a key indicator of success.

“As community college enrollments continue to increase, school leaders are incorporating new technologies to enhance student services and improve course curriculum,” said Cathilea Robinett, executive vice president of the Center for Digital Education. “Expanded distance learning offerings, use of mobile devices, and greater collaboration – among other efforts – demonstrate these winners’ drive to provide students with a high-quality education at a lower cost. Congratulations!”
