Monday, May 14, 2012 (The Bronx, NY) – A quartet of Hostos Community College students took center stage on May 3 and were recognized at The Bronx Dominican Parade’s 23rd Anniversary Awards ceremony held at Marina del Rey.
The students - Gretcher Hernández, Manuel Mercedes, Ruth Romero and Yandry Taveras - earned $1,000 scholarships for their outstanding academic achievement and service to the Dominican community. Jason Libfeld, Hostos Leadership Academy Coordinator, accompanied the group to the event.
In addition to the students, Mercedes Moscat, the Executive Associate for the Office of the President, was also recognized for her outstanding contributions and collaboration with the Bronx Dominican Parade organizers.
“It brings me tremendous joy to represent the college and to be present as our students continue to achieve their academic goals. They are true ambassadors of our linguistic and diverse communities,” Moscat said.
The students were also hailed by New York City Public Advocate, Bill de Blasio. Before being elected to his post in 2009, de Blasio served in the New York City Council for eight years where he fought to make City Hall more responsive and accountable to New Yorkers.
