THE HOSTOS CIRCLE OF 100 SCHOLARSHIP AND EMERGENCY FUND HELD ITS FIFTH BENEFIT CONCERT, A TANGO CELEBRATION WITH THE NUEVO TANGO OF ASTOR PIAZZOLLA JAZZ CONCERT

March 14, 2011 (Bronx, New York)- The Hostos Circle of 100 Scholarship and Emergency Fund held its fifth benefit concert, Tango style, on Friday, March 11, 2011 at the Hostos Repertory Theater with The Nuevo Tango of Astor Piazzolla Jazz Concert.
An intimate reception held at the Hostos Gallery preceding the concert, recognized the efforts of two Dental Hygiene students by presenting each with emergency grants to assist them with expenses associated with their state board exams. Recipients April Walker, Class of 2011, and Wanda Zorrilla, Class of 2011, acknowledged The Circle of 100 for validating their hard work.
“My goal is to one day become a donor just like you and support the hard work of future dental hygiene students,” stated April Walker. Ms. Zorrilla, visibly moved to tears by the generosity of the alumni attending the reception expressed, “I have worked really hard in the Dental Hygiene program, and to have my academic work recognized and acknowledged by you is truly a gift to my heart.”

President Felix V. Matos Rodriguez greeted the audience and thanked all donors for their continuous financial support on behalf of Hostos students. He stressed the importance of giving at a time when state and federal funds are being reduced for all CUNY schools and higher education across the nation.
Dr. Victor Vásquez, Class of 1973, a professor at Miami Dade College, shared his personal experience as an Hostos student in the late 1970s remarking, “I went from a GED to a PhD. I was able to accomplish my educational goals because of the academic foundation I received at Hostos. I continued my education under the GI bill and have been able to pay back my education… a fund for a college education for our students is something that we all should support.”
The pre-concert reception attendees were treated to a special tango performance by Amor y Tango, a New York based tango dance couple, with Sergio Segura and Medianoche Burlesca, choreographed by Segura to Astor Piazzolla dance numbers. The Nuevo Tango quintet featuring Pancho Navarro, Pedro Giraudo, Leonardo Suarez Paz, Lidia Kaminska and Tim Ribchester presented an extraordinary concert of Piazzolla music and performance style.
