HOSTOS STUDENT AMBASSADORS
HIT THE STREETS TO SERVE THE COMMUNITY

Hostos Student Ambassadors Hit the Streets to Serve the Community

Wednesday, October 30, 2013 (Bronx, NY) - During the weekend of October 18, Student Ambassadors from Eugenio María de Hostos Community College’s Student Leadership Academy participated in two major service activities in the Bronx.

On October 19, 20 Hostos Ambassadors helped to beautify the Bronx Park Middle School in the Pelham Parkway neighborhood. Students painted murals on doors, added color to classroom tables, and helped to plant flower bulbs in the gardens that surround the school. Their hard worked helped to restore, refresh and reinvigorate an important Bronx institution, and they were thanked for their service by New York State Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj, who represents New York’s 80th Assembly District in the Bronx.

Their efforts were part of New York Cares’ annual fall day of service. New York Cares offers opportunities for individuals to make a significant difference at local schools that are in need of support from the community.

The following day, Hostos Ambassadors braved the early morning chill and arrived in the Northern Bronx at 6:00 a.m. to provide refreshments for participants in the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Orchard Beach. Thirty members of the Academy packed bags, handed out refreshments, and walked in the event, in which the College and the Leadership Academy have played a role for the past six years. Continuing a tradition, members of the Academy build a pyramid to show their team unity and ability to navigate through challenging situations.
