HOSTED A JOINT CELEBRATION OF DOMINICAN
HERITAGE AND DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.
MONTH
IN HONOR OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

(Bronx, New York) March 3, 2011 - Hostos Community College and the Office of Alumni Relations hosted a joint celebration of Black History and Dominican History month on Thursday, February 24th, 2011 at the Atrium Glass Gallery. The reception presented Pedro Gaston’s Art Exhibition, “República de Mi Corazón: en Nueva York.” The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Award Ceremony announced Catina Rogers, Lillian George, David Santos and Carlos Rojas - active members of the Hostos Leadership Academy directed by Jason Libfeld – each winners of $500 dollars in scholarship.
The event, attended by past and present alumni, was sponsored by Healthfirst and Hot 97-Radio FM. Mr. George Hulse, Vice President of Community Affairs for Healthfirst, encouraged the audience to remember the legacy Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and congratulated Hostos for advancing and supporting the education of African-American and Latino students throughout the years.
Nydia R. Edgecombe, Director of Alumni Relations and coordinator of the event stated, “This is a great celebration with the African-American and Dominican people. I know people are here to support our students with scholarships, but also to support the concept of unity among our alumni, students and the community.”
Ms. Ana Carrión-Silva, Hostos’ Vice President for Institutional Advancement acknowledged GALOS Corporation, The Diversity Foundation, Hot 97 Radio FM and Healthfirst for their support in providing scholarships to exemplary students.
Live music and spoken word closed the reception with a live performance by The Hostos Band with lead singer Natalie Vasquez also an Hostos student, performing Quisqueya in merengue style; while Rondell Charles, performed an original poem titled, “Imagine I have a Dream.”
Among the attendees were Honorable Nelson Castro, Honorable Guillermo Linares and Honorable Fernando Cabrera.
