What: The 2012 Garfinkel Essay Contest of the Historical Society of the Courts of the State of New York is open to students, from all academic disciplines, registered in CUNY and SUNY community colleges for the fall semester of 2011 and the spring semester of 2012.
TOPIC: Commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War this year's contest topic is:
The Blue and the Gray: New York During the Civil War.
PRIZES: This year the contest will award a $1,500 First Prize, a $1,000 Second Prize and a $750 Third Prize.
The winners will be honored at the Law Day Ceremony in May, 2012. The Ceremony is presided by The Chief Judge of the State of New York and attended by the Governor, the Attorney General and the Bench and Bar of New York.
DEADLINE, RESOURCES and RULES: The essay submission deadline is April 2, 2012.
