FIVE HOSTOS STUDENTS RECEIVE
NEW YORK YANKEES SCHOLARSHIPS

Five Hostos Students Receive New York Yankees Scholarships

June 15, 2011 (Bronx, NY) –Last night, the Yankees gave $1,000 National Puerto Rican Day Parade scholarships to five Hostos students during their Rangers game. The three recipients from the COPE Program were Michelle Rosario, Destiny Rosado and Jessenia Toro and from the Leadership Academy the awardees were Tara Mercado and Mariana Rivera.   Nydia R. Edgecombe, Director of Alumni Relations in the Division of Institutional Advancement, coordinated the scholarship effort at Hostos Community College.

The scholarships were presented by Jorge Posada in the Yankee Stadium field in front of over 43,000 thousand fans, Marc Anthony music playing in the background and interchangeable images of the Puerto Rican flag and Hostos students displayed in all the monitors of the stadium.  Manny Garcia, Esq., Director of Latino Affairs for the Yankees, indicated that, “It is a great honor for me to work with Hostos Community College, our neighbor college, and the Diversity Foundation in supporting the education of these young women.”

For Mariana Rivera, a student in the Paralegal program with a GPA of 3.7, the experience was unforgettable, “I was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and came to New York in 2003 looking for a better life and a better future.  I have set my goals high to become a lawyer.  I plan to work hard, study hard and absorb as much as I can from everyone around me.  This experience of getting this award at Yankee Stadium will stay with me forever.  This experience encourages me to continue to believe in myself and all the possibilities out there. I believe everything happens for a reason and every reason is a lesson to be learned and then shared and applied further in life,” said Mariana.

In attendance,  Carlos Velásquez, class of 1974, GALOS Corporation; Debra Martínez, Executive Director,  Diversity Foundation; Lourdes Gomera, COPE Program Coordinator;  Jose García, Public Relations Assistant and Nydia R. Edgecombe, Director of Alumni Relations Office from Hostos Community College.
