Friday, June 22, 2012 (Bronx, NY) - Five lucky Hostos Community College students were on the field at Yankees Stadium on June 6 to meet All-Star second baseman Robinson Canó and receive a special gift.
The students: (L-R) Harry Copson, Joseph Cruzado, Raquel Rodríguez, Steven Comas and Paul Feliciano (who could not attend) received $1,000 National Puerto Rican Day Parade scholarships through the Diversity Foundation.
Hostos President Félix V. Matos Rodríguez; Debra Martínez, Executive Director of the Diversity Foundation; and Luis G. Rivera Marín, Secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs and Executive Director of Tourism Company in Puerto Rico also joined the students on the field.
The students got an extra treat as they also were given tickets and watched the Yankees beat the rival Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 4-1.
The scholarships are an example of how Hostos and the Yankees are teaming up to support student success. Last year, five other Hostos students received similar awards. And, Lina Cruz, a recent Hostos graduate, is working at Yankees Stadium as an intern in the Yankees Department of Latino Affairs.
