CUNY/ACT WRITING EXAMINATION

The Introductory Paragraph - Practices

Now let’s look at the prompt on improving the city’s transportation system:

The City Council has received a large grant from the federal government in order to improve transportation in the city. There are two proposals: The city can spend the money on upgrading the present subway and bus system or it can create a new subway line and additional bus routes. There is only enough money to fund one of the proposals. Write a letter to the city council stating whether you favor upgrading the present subway and bus system or expanding the subway lines and bus routes. Explain why the proposal that you favor will better improve transportation in the city. Begin your letter: Dear City Council:

Let’s look at some introductions to this prompt. See if you can determine what are the strengths and weaknesses of each introduction. Click on the statement following each introduction that best fits the introduction. Read the pop-ups for the answers:

Introduction #1
Dear City Council:
I heard you have a federal grant to improve transportation in the city and there are two proposals: upgrading the present subway and bus system or to create new subway and bus lines. Around where I live, there is no buses and subway close by. That is why I think you should add new bus lines and subway routes.

  4. both a and c.

Introduction #2
Dear City Council:
I understand that you have received a large grant from the federal government in order to improve transportation in the city. I think both proposals are good, but I support the first one. Here are my reasons why.

2. Introduction #2:

  1. does not take a position
  2. does not mention the two proposals

Introduction #3
Dear City Council:
It has come to my attention that you have a large grant from the federal government to improve transportation in the city. There are two proposals: The city can spend the money on upgrading the present subway and bus system or it can create a new subway line and additional bus routes. There is only enough money to fund one of the proposals. I support the second proposal because there are several areas of the city that need bus lines and subways and putting subways and buses in those areas will improve the transportation in the city.

3. Introduction #3:

  1. does not mention the situation
  2. does not mention the criterion of judgment
  3. does not use the student’s own words
  4. does not have a thesis statement
