Study Guide: Listening Is an Act of Love

B. Reading the Stories

2. KEN KOBUS interviewed by his friend RON BARAFF

Pre-reading statement of opinion:  It is customary in American society for mothers and fathers to take their children to the workplace every now and then.  Do you agree that this is a good practice?  Why or why not?

Post-reading guided summary:  Explain how Ken Kobus became familiar with the steel mill and made his father proud.  Describe how steel “stuck with [his] father all his life” (63) and how his father’s job became a part of his being even on his deathbed.

Personal response:  Write your reaction to one or two aspects of the summary you have written, and try to connect this response to the opinion that you expressed before reading the StoryCorps transcript.
