Study Guide: Listening Is an Act of Love

B. Reading the Stories

6. LENDALL HILL interviewed by his daughter LORI FITZGERALD

Pre-reading statement of opinion:  Some children resent it when their parents tell them stories about how life was tougher for them when they were children.  Do you agree that the children have a right to show their resentment?  Why or why not?

Post-reading guided summary:  Write the story of the artificial leg in your own words.  Explain why Lendall Hill’s father got his leg cut off and how he impressed people like the timber checker and the man who fixed circle saws throughout the years.

Personal response:  Write your reaction to one or two aspects of the summary you have written, and try to connect this response to the opinion that you expressed before reading the StoryCorps transcript.
