Study Guide: Listening Is an Act of Love

B. Reading the Stories

6. KIM SCHUMER interviewed by her sister AMY SCHUMER

Pre-reading statement of opinion:  The love of family members for one another does not always suffice to get a mother, brother, or sister to stop indulging in self-destructive behavior.  Do you agree that the kinds of “interventions” that go beyond the scope of family members themselves should be a necessary option?  Why or why not?

Post-reading guided summary:  Describe Kim Schumer’s battle with self-mutilation.  Explain how this behavior started and give examples of specific moments when her desire to mutilate herself has taken hold.  Discuss the role that the love of her mother and sister has played in helping her to change her behavior.

Personal response:  Write your reaction to one or two aspects of the summary you have written, and try to connect this response to the opinion that you expressed before reading the StoryCorps transcript.
