Study Guide: Listening Is an Act of Love

B. Reading the Stories

1. VIRGINIA HILL FAIRBROTHER interviewed by her daughter LAUREL KAYE

Pre-reading statement of opinion:  Do you agree that people are sometimes better off being born into unfortunate, rather than fortunate, circumstances?  Why or why not?

Post-reading guided summary:  Explain why 1936 was Virginia Hill Fairbrother’s most “odoriferous” (165) year and how a wonderful teacher resolved this problem.  Tell how her father gave her a feeling of “self-worth” (167) and how his actions of kindness towards strangers reinforced the growth of this feeling within her.

Personal response:  Write your reaction to one or two aspects of the summary you have written, and try to connect this response to the opinion that you expressed before reading the StoryCorps transcript.
