B. Reading the Stories

3. DEBRA A. FISHER interviewed by Storycorps facilitator KAREN DIMATTIA

Pre-reading statement of opinion:  Do you agree that parents who are too protective of their children do not prepare them adequately for life?  Why or why not?

Post-reading guided summary:  Describe how Debra A. Fisher’s  father created “two Auschwitzes” (175) for her and how she finally got her father to “open [the] door” (176).  Refer to the daughter’s need to know and the father’s efforts to keep her from knowing.

Personal response:  Write your reaction to one or two aspects of the summary you have written, and try to connect this response to the opinion that you expressed before reading the StoryCorps transcript.
