Study Guide: Listening Is an Act of Love

B. Reading the Stories

4. HEE-SOOK LEE interviewed by her daughter JOYCE KIM LEE

Pre-reading statement of opinion:  In some cultures, expressing one’s emotions is a natural kind of behavior.  In other cultures, the demonstration of one’s feelings is totally discouraged.  Do you agree that the axiom “When in Rome, do as the Romans do” should be followed when living in a particular culture?  Why or why not?

Post-reading guided summary:  Discuss how Hee-Sook Lee learned from Western culture the kind of demonstrative behavior that assured her and her husband a happy life.  Explain how she convinced her husband to change his ways.  Share the advice she gives her daughter for a happy marriage.

Personal response:  Write your reaction to one or two aspects of the summary you have written, and try to connect this response to the opinion that you expressed before reading the StoryCorps transcript.
