Study Guide: Listening Is an Act of Love

B. Reading the Stories

6. VICTORIA KELLER FRASER speaking with her grandson CHRISTOPHER JAMES FRASER

Pre-reading statement of opinion:  It is sometimes necessary for grandparents to raise their children’s children.  Do you believe this is a good situation?  Why or why not?  Describe circumstances that you think would warrant such a situation.

Post-reading guided summary:  Describe how Victoria Keller Fraser speaks about the relationship she has with Christopher James Fraser.  Explain what she means by her “arm’s-length perspective” (30). Give a few reasons why the grandson admires his grandmother and describes her as his grandfather’s “epicenter” (31) and also a “miracle worker” (31) in so many ways.

Personal response:  Write your reaction to one or two aspects of the summary you have written, and try to connect this response to the opinion that you expressed before reading the StoryCorps transcript.
