B. Scoring Points in a Debate According to the Rules of a Tennis Game

Other than the individual points that are played in a tennis game, a tennis game is the smallest unit of a tennis match. The winner of a tennis match has to win either the first two (women’s tennis) or three (men’s tennis) sets. To win a set, the player has to win a certain number of games. If there is a 6-6 tie in the number of games won, there is a tie-breaker. The player who wins the first 7 points of the tie-breaker wins the set.

1. Winning a Game:
The first player to win four points wins a game.

So, if a player wins four points straight, the scoring will go 15 – 0 (Love), 30 – 0 (Love), 40 – 0 (Love), and then game. As you can see, zero = Love.

If both players win three points each (or 40-40), the score is known as Deuce.

Once at deuce, one player must win two consecutive points to take the game.

(Imagine that Player A is the Server and Player B is the Receiver):

If Player A wins the next point, the score is “Advantage Server.”

If Player B wins the point, the score is “Advantage Receiver.”

If the player at advantage wins the point, s/he wins the game. If s/he loses it, the score goes back to Deuce.

Please note that the score of Player A is given before the score of Player B.

1. Player A wins two points in a row. Player B wins one point.

2. Player A loses the first point and Player B wins three consecutive points.

3. Player A wins the first three points. Player B then wins the next four points.

3. Scoring a Debate:

A debate is almost like a tennis match. One opponent gives an argument and then the other one responds to the weakness of that argument through a rebuttal. Whichever “player” defends his or her point of view with the most “logic” wins the point.

Topic
Should the Paparazzi have a right to pursue celebrities and take photos of them when they are not performing for the public but living their private lives?

Class Preparation
The class will be divided into “Yes” and “No” groups. Students in respective groups will brainstorm to find their reasons and strategies as they prepare for a debate

Debate Game
The class will observe as two teams of four or five students each argue “Yes” and “No” to the question raised. As the debate proceeds, the spectators will write on the “score card” below the main ideas of each team’s argument along with the rebuttals made by the other team. At the end of the debate, the class will decide for each point argued which team won that point. After determining who won each point, the score will be tallied according to the rules of tennis.
