XII. Chapter Eleven: My dear Camera

B. Writing Incentives

Choose one of these writing assignments.

1.  Creating a Family Tree:

In this chapter, Arthur Ashe gives a detailed account of his daughter’s family history.  Do as Arthur Ashe has done.  Create your own family tree and show how your own life took root.  Draw a diagram first and then explain in a composition not only how you came into being but also how your knowledge of your past contributed to the development of your identity.

2.  Writing a Dialogue:

Go back to the Do’s/Don’ts column of the chart you completed in the General Comprehension section, and critique as good or bad one of the pieces of advice Arthur Ashe gives to his daughter.  Do this in an imaginary conversation with Arthur Ashe.

You may want to start this way:
You:    Mr. Ashe, in your letter to your daughter Camera, you said that ______________.
Ashe:  That’s right.  I believe that _____________________________.
You:     I agree totally with you./I’m not sure I agree with you.  ____________________.
ETC.

3. Reporting on Research Findings

Do Internet research on Blacks’ “Great Migration” from the South to the city of Chicago and the American concept of “Manifest Destiny.”  In your report on your findings, answer this question:  Were these similar concepts and movements?  Why or why not?
