1. Working with Quotations:
“I make it a point to keep in touch with friends from my childhood in Richmond. I cannot help but think that childhood friends are the bedrock of all one’s future relationships, and that you move away from them at risk. There is an African proverb in which I believe: Hold on to your friends with both hands” (6).
Explain what you think Arthur Ashe means when he writes that “childhood friends are the bedrock of all one’s future relationships, and that you move away from them at risk.” Refer to your own experiences in life as you show why you agree or disagree with his comment.
2. Expressing an Opinion:
“If one’s reputation is a possession, then of all my possessions, my reputation means most to me” (1).
Do you agree with Ashe that your reputation is your most important possession? If so, what have you done in order to maintain the upkeep of this possession? If not, what is your most important possession and how do you protect it?
3. Summarizing and Responding:
Do you believe the medical conditions of celebrities should be made public? Using the notes you took in the Right to Privacy boxes in item #7 of the General Comprehension section, summarize the main arguments “For” and “Against” celebrities’ right to privacy and then respond by taking a stand.
4. Point-of-View Writing:
You are Arthur Ashe. Write a letter in reply to one of the letters that you received from people after USA Today forced you to hold a press conference about your AIDS condition.
