Faculty Development in Technology
Aligned with the mission of the Office of Instructional Technology, the Faculty Development Program introduces faculty to using the latest technologies to assist them in reaching their educational objectives. In a constantly evolving and changing technology landscape, innovative trends in online learning, rich media in education and social networking offer rich opportunities to effectively engage students in the educational process and enhance the delivery of educational material.
OIT provides online tutorials and a series of workshops/sessions geared to keep faculty abreast of ways to effectively integrate technology in education.
As a consequence of this effort, courses may now be offered using the internet in lieu of the standard face-to-face presentation. These are classified as either hybrid or asynchronous.
| Hybrid: | In these courses at least 50% of the class activities will take place online. Students participate in the class, via the Internet, from anywhere and at their own time. Students will be expected to complete assignments at a computer and participate in online discussions. |
| Asynchronous: | In these courses at least 80% of the class activities will take place online. Students participate in the class, via the Internet, from anywhere and at their own time. Students will be expected to complete assignments at a computer and participate in online discussions |
Beginning Fall 2009 OIT will take a different approach to provide these resources. There will be peer sessions where colleagues will have the opportunity to learn from each other by attending a faculty-lead session. These sessions are centered on experiences acquired through the use of different technologies in the classroom, and are geared to provide the pros and cons from a faculty point of view.
There will a series of sessions covering a variety of topics, and which can always be adjusted based on the needs requested by the Hostos faculty. For a list of the current workshops offered, visit this link.
Additionally, traditional workshops will be converted to podcasts and made available online, and be accessible at any time. For a list of available tutorials, visit this link.
And finally OIT instructional Design Specialists will host a monthly open session to discuss a variety of emerging topics on Educational Technology.
