The Technology <=> Education Showcase (formerly Faculty Day) has been created to present to the Hostos community innovative uses of technology in the classroom. Faculty members together with the support of the Office of Instructional Technology will have an opportunity to share their innovative usage of technology in teaching to reach new levels of student engagement and improved performance. This annual event not only provides a setting for the college community to attend presentations and demonstrations, but also creates an opportunity for networking, collaboration, sharing of technical information and the building of best practices.

| Title: | Welcome to the Showcase
[video] |
| Presenter: | Marianne Dombroski National Education Manager The New York Times Knowledge Network |
| Abstract: | Today’s students are lifelong learners who often enroll at multiple educational institutions, frequently engage in extracurricular and co-curricular learning activities, and desire social networking among others with common interests. How can the ePortfolio best support these students along the way?
We will take a look at private vs. public portfolios; at the social vs. the academic portfolio; and the static vs. dynamic portfolio. Finally, we will compare portfolios that are specific to an individual’s experience at one college to portfolios that transcend academic institutions, curricular programs, and life experiences. How can the ePortfolio facilitate powerful learning, learning that often occurs outside the classroom? We’ll also consider some of the ‘big’ questions surrounding electronic portfolios in the classroom, such as: Should institutions of higher education teach students how to develop and maintain digital identity in a responsible manner? Can institutions of higher education assess the learning that occurs both inside and outside the walls of its classrooms and view student learning outcomes? How can we better encourage students to bring the whole of their learning experiences into the classroom? To bring what they learn in the classroom out into the greater community. |

| Co-Presenter(s): | Prof. Kate Lyons |
| Department: | Library |
| Document [pdf] |
|
| Abstract: | Information literacy and technology are required GenEd skills. Supplement the library's workshops by assigning any of these 8 tutorials to teach the skills. | Title: | Bringing the Classroom Home: The CPE Task I Tutorial
[video] |
| Document [pdf] |
|
| Presenter: | Prof. Andrea Fabrizio |
| Co-Presenter(s): | Prof. Gregory Marks; Prof. George Rosa |
| Department: | English |
| Abstract: | This semester we redesigned a portion of the Hostos CPE Task I Review Site to include video, voice, and interactive text. This is part of an ongoing effort to use rich media to enhance student engagement and confidence in preparing for the CPE. This tutorial focuses on active reading strategies and enables students who may not be able to attend CPE workshops to have access to some of the strategies and skills covered in the workshops. We will present the interactive aspects of the tutorial that promote active learning, including video, self tests, and handouts. |
| RICH MEDIA IN TEACHING/LEARNING | |
| Title: | A Podcaster Grows in Brooklyn
[video] |
| Presenter: | Prof. George Rosa |
| Co-Presenter(s): | |
| Department: | Natural Sciences / OIT |
| Abstract: | In this presentation Ill demonstrate how rich media technology such as Tablet PC, the software Camtasia and freely available video and audio podcasts have been used to cover complex topics such as Genetics, Development and Evolution for Introductory Biology and Anatomy and Physiology students. You will witness how, as more educational technology tools were conceived, and the technological environment changed, the instructor developed and evolved more sophisticated practices along the way. |
| Title: | Rich Media Podcasts for the ESL Classroom
[video] |
| Presenter: | Prof. Patricia Frenz-belkin |
| Co-Presenter(s): | Prof. George Rosa |
| Department: | Language and Cognition |
| Abstract: | Our presentation will focus on the creation of a multimedia lesson incorporating recorded lecture with audio, video and images for podcasting. The lesson in question was designed to illustrate the power of the visual arts as means of human communication. The capabilities of the laptop computer, the recording and editing software Camtasia, and freely available video clips and images from the web are uniquely suited to compose a rich media experience for learners both inside and outside the classroom. Such experiences have been proven to enhance student learning through encouraging student engagement, critical-thinking and confidence-building. |
| Title: | Using Podcasts in Online Instruction: Responding to Diverse Learning Styles
[video] |
| Presenter: | Prof. Gina Cicco |
| Document [pdf] |
|
| Co-Presenter(s): | |
| Department: | Health and Human Services Teacher Education |
| Abstract: | This presentation will describe the process through which I created a Podcast for an online course, Introduction to Special Education. The podcast involved a Power Point presentation, which included various instructional slides, and videos of the instructor actually teaching in a classroom setting, while lecturing, taking questions, and facilitating group activities. The focus of the presentation will be on incorporating a variety of media as a crucial component of meeting individual students learning-style preferences in the online classroom. |
| Title: | Student-made Science Videos
[video] |
| Presenter: | Prof. Zvi Ostrin |
| Co-Presenter(s): | |
| Document [pdf] |
|
| Department: | Natural Sciences |
| Abstract: | I will describe a novel student video-making project that I developed for my Anatomy & Physiology class. The project takes advantage of the near ubiquity of digital cameras and Microsoft Movie Maker, which makes it easy to give our students video-making assignments on course themes. The videos can be posted on the Web for ready access and review. Examples from several student videos will demonstrate the high level of talent and technological savvy among our students. Finally, I will discuss the pedagogical advantages of using similar video projects in the sciences as well as across the disciplines. |
| Title: | Digital Story Telling in ESL: Narratives from a Global Environment

The presentation will further offer a brief summary of the technical elements involved in the production of digital stories. |

| Title: | Crafting your own exam: A GenEd Discussion Board
[video] |
| Presenter: | Prof. Nelson Nunez-rodriguez |
| Co-Presenter(s): | Student Siba Safiyano; Student Noah Lawson |
| Document [pdf] |
|
| Department: | Natural Sciences |
| Abstract: | This forum allows students to suggest exam questions. Students must explain what aspects or skills are evaluated by it. Students can also support or disagree with other students postings explaining their position. By this experience, students are involved in their own assessment process, approach the content critically and become familiar with the GenEd terminology. The instructor also participates in the discussion pointing out important aspects of the content. The exam should contain some of the discussed questions. This presentation will address both the instructors and the students perspectives on the use of this tool. |
