Hostos-Columbia Global Scholars Program


Program Overview

The Global Scholars Program is a unique partnership of public and private institutions of higher education. It provides college students from diverse ethnic backgrounds with the educational and professional background needed for leadership roles in foreign affairs and national defense. Scholars at Hostos Community College follow the Liberal Arts Honors Program. Additionally, Scholars participate in extracurricular and off-campus activities such as seminars, workshops, and conferences. Scholars are evaluated at the end of each semester for retention in the Program.

Required Program Curriculum

Students accepted in the Global Scholars Program must carry 15 credits per semester with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Working closely with faculty advisors, Scholars must complete all requirements for the Liberal Arts A.A. or A.S. degree with the honors option and must complete one honors contract each semester.

The Scholarship

Global Scholars receive:

  • Full tuition coverage
  • A stipend (pending availability of funds)
  • Loan of a personal laptop computer
  • Use of the Honors Reading Room
  • Mentoring, tutoring, and enrichment activities
  • Opportunity to participate in study abroad programs
Eligibility
  • U.S. citizenship
  • Acceptance as a student at Hostos Community College
  • Entering in the Liberal Arts A.A. or A.S. degree programs
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5 or 85% H.S. average
  • Passing scores or exemption on all CUNY assessment tests
  • English language proficiency
  • Strong bilingual skills (recommended)
  • Demonstrated interest in community service, volunteering, mentoring, tutoring, and participation in school clubs (recommended)

Program Funding

The Global Scholars Program is funded by grants from the United States Departments of State and Defense. It is administered through a partnership with Hostos Community College, CUNY, and Columbia University's School of General Studies (GS) and School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). The Program honors Congressman José Serrano, U.S. Representative for the 16th District of New York, who was instrumental in its conception.
