Integrating the Humanities into General Education

An NEH-Sponsored Faculty Development Initiative

“From Inquiry to Innovation” is a one-year, interdisciplinary, multi-campus initiative that will bring together faculty participants from across the City University of New York system. Its goal is to promote the study of the humanities through workshops and seminars centered on the theme of “conflict and dialogue.” The grant period will culminate in a final workshop that will develop curricula and syllabi meant to unify student experience through the development of first-year and capstone courses. A two-day introductory seminar in October 2009 will help frame the importance of the issue and outline the challenges of teaching substantial humanities texts to a varied student population. A speaker series in fall 2009 and spring 2010 will present scholars reflecting on the theme through the lens of their disciplines. Finally, a three-day seminar in May 2010 will assist faculty as they frame specific freshman or capstone courses. Sponsored by the NEH and endorsed by Hostos’ Office of Academic Affairs and Center for Teaching and Learning, this initiative is meant to ensure student success from matriculation through graduation by helping faculty become more effective teachers of the substantial issues in the humanities, and in life.

CUNY faculty are invited to apply by October 9, 2009.
