Environmental Scanning SubCommittee of OAA Academic PlanningIn fall 2006, the college’s Academic Planning Committee (APC) created an Environmental Scanning Subcommittee with a two-pronged charge: to “pilot test” environmental scanning at Hostos, identifying immediate program specific recommendations as needed; and to make recommendations for the long term development of environmental scanning on campus.
Preparing the future college educated workforce of America is no simple task. The pace of change in our world keeps accelerating, forcing colleges and universities to grapple with more and more factors external to their institutions. Increasingly, colleges and universities are taking a page from the corporate world and developing new management tactics to navigate within their constantly shifting external environments. This work is particularly important in community college settings. Community colleges in the U.S. carry enormous responsibility to help preserve the future strength of our nation. They prepare almost half of U.S. undergraduates to enter jobs and careers that help the U.S. remain competitive. They serve the academic, socioeconomic and racial/ethnic diversity of students who will become our nation’s future workers and tax base. Fortifying their institutional capacity to forecast and respond to future student needs will absolutely affect the quality of life for millions of Americans, well beyond those attending these schools.
Recognizing this, Hostos Community College has embarked on an exploration into how the college could benefit from environmental scanning.
