FWS On-Campus & Off-Campus Guidelines

Hostos Community College operates an open market student employment system that allows you to make direct contact with the employer (supervisor). Hundreds of jobs are available in departments throughout the College and at agencies approved to participate in our off-campus FWS program.

Consider your priorities before you apply for a position. What are your maximum FWS earnings for the year? How many hours per week do you want to work? What type of job are you most interested in? What experience do you hope to gain from holding a job?

The Office of Financial Aid will be conducting placements workshops at the beginning of every semester. In these workshops, the student will have to opportunity to be placed in one of our on-campus departments.

An important purpose of FWS program is to engender a sense of social responsibility and commitment to the community through service job opportunities. Community service jobs are those in services designed to improve the equality of life for community residents, particularly low-income individuals, or to solve particular problems related to their needs. Numerous off-campus jobs, as well as limited number of on-campus jobs, provide the opportunity for students to perform community service work in conjunction with earning the funds needed to meet educational costs.

Hostos Community College's off-campus FWS program offers unique employment opportunities to students. Wage rates for these positions are typically higher than those for on-campus jobs to reflect the time spent traveling to the off-campus work site. All transportation arrangements and costs are the responsibility of the student employee.

Agencies must be approved by The City University of New York and sign a contract with the College in order to participate in the off-campus FWS program. A significant amount of administrative effort is required to operate this program, and only a limited number of agencies can participate each year.
