Federal Work Study Award
Your FWS award represents the amount from part-time
work that you are expected to contribute toward your cost of education during
the school year. The FWS award amount is the maximum total earning you can
receive under the program. A student must work and earn only the amount
indicated on the Financial Aid Notification. It is important that you and your
supervisor calculate the total number of hours that can be worked during the
year at your wage rate so that you will not exceed your award maximum.
A FWS award represents an opportunity to earn funds
to assist you in meeting the related costs of your
education. The actual amount of money you will receive
depends on the number of hours you work each week, and
the wage rate you are paid (i.e. a 10-20 hours per week/$7.25 per hour). You will receive a biweekly
paycheck for hours worked. You may use the money to
meet living expenses, or apply it toward an outstanding
balance on your student account. FWS are never
distributed as a lump sum, nor can be paid for hours not
actually worked.
FWS awards are made for, and must be earned in, a specific time period -
either the academic year (Fall and Spring semesters), or the summer. If you do
not earn all of your FWS in either the academic year or summer, the unearned
amount is forfeited and cannot
be carried over into the next award period.
