Are you a veteran?

YOU ARE A VETERAN OF THE U.S. ARMED FORCES (ARMY, NAVY, AIR FORCE, MARINES, OR COAST GUARD);

You should answer "Yes" (you are a veteran) on your 2010-11 FAFSA if

  1. you have engaged in active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard) or are a member of the National Guard or Reserves enlistee who was called to active duty for purposes other than training, or were a cadet or midshipman at one of the service academies, and
  2. you were released under a condition other than dishonorable. Box 24 of the DD214 indicates the "Character of Service." If anything other than "dishonorable" appears in that box, you should answer "Yes" to this question, as long as you engaged in active duty for at least one day. If "dishonorable" appears in that box, you should answer "No."

You should also answer "Yes" if you are not a veteran now but will be one by June 30, 2011.

You should answer "No" (you are not a veteran) on your 2010-11 FAFSA if

  1. you have never engaged in active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces,

  2. you are currently an ROTC student or a cadet or midshipman at a service academy, or

  3. you are a National Guard or Reserves enlistee activated only for training.

You should also answer "No" if you are currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces and will continue to serve through June 30, 2011.

For more information about veterans, please visit the Office of Student Programming for Veteran and Reservists located in the "C" Building, Room C-377.
