POSITION: Director of New Student Advisement and Retention Programming (HEO Associate)




POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES

The Director of the New Student Advisement and Retention Programming will carry out the services of the Center which include new student advisement, academic progress review, development and coordination of retention efforts for new and continuing students. The position is responsible for the formulation, implementation, and assessment of a comprehensive retention program that supports the learning, personal development, retention, and graduation of our students. The Director collaborates with various Student Development & Enrollment Management (SDEM) units to assure that students progress forward toward degree fulfillment and transfer. The Evening Weekend Services Coordinator also reports to the Director. The Director will report to the Assistant Dean for Student Development.

Position responsibilities:

  • Provide effective leadership, management and staff supervision/development;

  • Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with the Office of Academic Affairs, SDEM Units, faculty and staff to facilitate advisement and academic progress review for new students;

  • Coordinate and provide advisement services to designated new student cohort groups: freshmen, transfer, international students, probationary students, multiple transfer-ins, etc; (non-ESL and non-Allied Health);

  • Direct the day-to-day operations of the college’s retention and new student advisement services;

  • Coordinate, track, report, and utilize retention data research and analysis, using GRADS database and other resources, to identify obstacles to student achievement and retention;

  • Design, coordinate and target new intervention services, programs and initiatives focused on student retention and development;

  • Collaborate with Dean of Students Office to develop and coordinate interventions for at-risk student populations;

  • Co-facilitate process to transition advisement of students to faculty after the first semester;

  • Coordinate New Student Orientation and assists with college’s registration activities;

  • Develop and manage the annual department budget;

  • Serve on college and system-wide committees;

  • Conduct retention and advisement program review and evaluation;

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
     


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

A Master's degree and six (6) years of experience in a college/university setting are required. A Doctorate in education, sociology, counseling or related field along with experience in retention management is preferred. Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills preferred. Must be able to work some evening and weekend hours.

Competencies and Skills Required:

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of retention research;

  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of retention and student development theory;

  • Demonstrated ability, with documented evidence, of new program/initiative development and implementation;

  • Demonstrated history as a self-starter with strong initiative and motivation;

  • Demonstrated ability and experience in the effective supervision, management and development of staff;

  • Ability and experience in goal setting, strategic planning, and outcomes measurement;

  • Advising and academic planning;

  • Excellent leadership, administrative and management skills (i.e., organizational, prioritization, multitasking, follow-up, etc.);

  • Ability to effectively communicate in oral and written form, including writing formal proposals and reports;

  • Ability to assess staff strengths versus student and college needs and to assign responsibilities appropriately;

  • Ability to assume a leadership role in representing the New Student Advisement and Retention Programming to the College community.

     


SALARY: $50,321 - $80,020
