The
HCC Sexual Harassment Awareness and Intake Committee
Sexual harassment,
which is illegal under Federal, State and City laws, will not be
tolerated within the City University of New York (“CUNY”). The policy of
CUNY is to promote a cooperative work and academic environment on each
campus free from sexual harassment.
In 1995, the CUNY Board of Trustees promulgated the CUNY Policy Against
Sexual Harassment and Procedures For Implementation of the CUNY Policy
Against Sexual Harassment (herein referred to as “CUNY Policy and
Procedures”). The CUNY Policy and Procedures were amended on January 1,
2005.
The goal of the CUNY Policy and Procedures is to informally resolve all
complaints. To that end, the Procedures now require that one
committee be constituted on campus by the President of Hostos, the Sexual
Harassment Awareness and Intake Committee (SHAIC).
All members of the SHAIC will perform initial intake of complaints.
The Coordinator and Deputy Coordinator of the SHAIC are
charged with handling the intake of complaints, referral to other resources,
and the informal resolution of complaints. In the event an informal
resolution is not achieved, the Panel will formally investigate a complaint.
The Coordinator will report the findings to the President or the Vice
President of Student Development and Enrollment Management who may institute
corrective and/or disciplinary proceedings.
The mission of the education component of the committee is to
disseminate the CUNY Policy and Procedures and to educate and sensitize the
entire college community (including staff, faculty and students)
about issues of sexual harassment. We have already met with your department.
We will be holding workshops across the College again to inform you
about the revised CUNY Policy and Procedures. We are currently formulating a
packet of resources to facilitate inclusion of this subject into the
curriculum.
An excellent resource which you can access right now is the online course,
“Preventing Sexual Harassment.” The mastery test should be taken and a
certificate can be issued for inclusion in your Personnel file. The URL for
the course, test and certificate is:

Attached, please find the 2005-2006 list of members of
the SHAIC.
