VICE PRESIDENT, ACADEMIC AFFAIRS
Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Vice President of Academic Affairs. The Vice President reports to the President of the District and is responsible for the administration, development, and integrity of all instructional programs and services in the district. Provides educational leadership in collaboration with the Dean of Instruction at each of the three campuses, and is assisted by the Associate Vice President and the system Deans/Directors for occupational education, nursing, library, faculty, contract education, the school of education (under consideration), the open campus, the school of the arts (in planning), and other appropriate staff. The academic departments within the Riverside Community College District are represented by faculty elected chairs and constitute the basic instructional unit of the district.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Vice President of Academic Affairs develops, in the shared governance structure, and recommends to the President policy relating to instructional programs and interprets educational laws, regulations and procedures. The Vice President supervises and coordinates academic planning and development, including new programs and certificates; reviews curricular additions, deletions and revisions; recommends to the President the appointment of new instructional faculty and staff, and projects future staffing needs congruent with the Educational Master Plan. The Vice President of Academic Affairs provides leadership for the improvement of instruction and for staff development; and cooperates in the preparation of annual budgets for instructional programs. Riverside Community College is in a planned multi-year transition from a one college on three campuses to one system with three separately accredited colleges. This position is likely to become a Vice Chancellorship for Academic Affairs. The Vice President of Academic Affairs serves as a member of the President's Cabinet, and with the Vice President of Student Services, provides staff support to the Board of Trustees Academic Affairs-Student Services Committee.
QUALIFICATIONS
Academic: Master's degree from an accredited university in one of the disciplines taught in the district is required. An earned Ph.D. is preferred.
Experience: Must have administrative experience as a Dean or higher level and seven years of full-time experience as a faculty member at an accredited institution.
Ability to: provide leadership in an environment of shared governance and collective bargaining. The successful candidate must demonstrate understanding of, and commitment to, the community college philosophy and an awareness of issues and trends in academic programs, support services, and technology, as well as ability to work with diverse campus and community groups and organizations.
Other: Evidence of a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students. (E.C. 87360a)
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Twelve-month contracts.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Paid vacation,
22 days annually; and paid accruable sick leave, 12 days annually.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
-
Develop and recommend to the President policy relating to instructional programs, administer procedures for implementation of policy, and interpret educational laws, regulations and procedures.

Supervise and coordinate curriculum planning and development, including new programs and certificates; review curricular additions, deletions and revisions and present faculty recommendations to the President and Board of Trustees.

Coordinate, with the Vice President of Planning and Development, the development of new degree or certificate programs, grants and contracts.

Recommend to the President the appointment of new instructional faculty and staff and project future staffing needs.

In cooperation with the Vice President of Administration and Finance, develop the annual budget for instructional programs, including recommendations regarding staffing needs.

Assist the Vice President of Planning and Development and the President's Cabinet in the development of the master plan and the development of long-range objectives. Develop, implement and evaluate action plans related to objectives.

Supervise the preparation of publications pertaining to the academic program of the District. Maintain records of required course approvals and a master file of current outlines of all District courses. Supervise preparation of the master schedule of classes, college catalog, teaching assignments, and classroom utilization, in accordance with established District policy.

Provide leadership for improvement of instruction and staff development.

Provide support to the President and the chief negotiator in collective bargaining negotiations with the faculty, and carry out contract agreements on a regular basis.

Work with Deans of Instruction and the District staff to promote the utilization of institutional research and planning as a means of evaluation and improving instructional programs and services to students.

Prepare Board reports pertaining to Academic Affairs with appropriate supporting materials for the President's review and approval.

Assist in interpreting College programs to the general public.

In concert with the Vice President of Student Services, provide staff support to the Board of Trustees, Academic Affairs and Student Services Committee.

Provide liaison between the President and the Academic Senate, and serve as a resource to the Academic Senate.

Serve the District as liaison officer for accreditation.

Prepare appropriate reports and correspondence for the Chancellor's Office and Board of Governors.

Maintain an understanding of current ideas, trends, and practices pertaining to the area of responsibility for this position.

Participate in local, regional, and state activities to promote the Riverside Community College District.

Conduct performance evaluations of assigned staff.
-
Participate in District sponsored in-service programs.
-
Carry out other duties as assigned by the President.
