AFFIRMATIVE ACTION POLICY
 
 
   

Hostos Community College is an Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Institution. The College does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, transgender, disability, genetic predisposition or carrier status, alienage or citizenship, veteran or marital status in its student admissions, employment, access to programs, and administration of educational policies.

Natalie Brown, Esq. is the College Affirmative Action Officer, coordinator for Title IX, which prohibits sex discrimination in federally assisted education programs, and coordinator for the Age Discrimination Act, which prohibits age discrimination in federally assisted education programs.

All college-wide efforts carried out through the Hostos Affirmative Action Office have a dual goal:

  1. To ensure that women and other protected minority groups—i.e., African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, and Pacific Islanders—are fully represented across all ranks, levels and positions at the college*; and
  2. To provide faculty and non-instructional staff members with full opportunity for advancement.

*As previously indicated, pursuant to the Chancellor’s 1976 mandate, Italian-Americans were designated as an affirmative action category, joining those groups categorized under existing mandates of the Federal Government as articulated by Executive Orders #11246 and #11375, as amended.

Throughout the year, Ms. Brown will continue to share the college’s Recruitment and Search Guidelines and other relevant materials with various constituencies of the Hostos community. Her work in this area builds on the college’s commitment to a program of affirmative action and equal opportunity. Specifically, Hostos Community College recruits, employs, retains, and promotes employees without regard to race, color, national or ethnic origin, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, transgender, disability, genetic predisposition or carrier status, alienage or citizenship, veteran or marital status.

The college firmly practices a policy of non-discrimination and believes in providing educational opportunities for the disadvantaged as a means of facilitating their access to a broader range of employment opportunities. While equal opportunity requires non-discrimination, affirmative action is the dynamic component, carrying with it the concept of positive, emphatic, and energetic efforts to advance equal employment actively.

The college’s policy of non-discrimination on the basis of disability conforms to the requirements and provisions of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as amended and its implementing regulations, ADA/504. Furthermore, the college’s policy and practices are in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, effective July 26th, 2000. Accordingly, its non-discrimination policy applies to employment by the college as well as admission to and treatment in programs of the college.

In keeping with the requirements of Title IX of the Higher Education Amendments Act of 1972 and the implementing federal regulations, the college maintains a policy of non-discrimination on the basis of gender in the operation of its educational programs and activities. Federal requirements for non-discrimination on the basis of gender include employment by the college as well as admission to programs it offers. The stated policy of The City University of New York and Eugenio María de Hostos Community College prohibits harassment of employees or students on the basis of gender.
