Frances Singh
PROFESSOR, ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

Frances Singhm, Ph.D. THERE IS only one four letter word in the English language," my father said, "and it is hate." He also always rooted for the underdog. So teaching at Hostos is a way by which I honor his memory. But I also teach at Hostos because in my years in India, I was influenced by the Gandhian ideal of selfless service. To paraphrase Johnathan Swift, the author of Gulliver's Travels, I do believe that whoever can make two blades of grass grow upon a spot where only one grew before does her community an essential service.

FRANCES SINGH has a B. A. from Queens College, CUNY, and an M.Phil. and Ph.D. from Yale University. She taught for nine years in India before joining Hostos as an Assistant Professor in the English Department in 1983, and now holds the rank of Professor. She has published articles on Conrad's Heart of Darkness, on Sophocles' Oedipus and Antigone, on works by E. M. Forster, and in other areas as well, such as opera history, radical pedagogy, culture criticism, and creative nonfiction. An article dealing with outcomes assessment and coauthored with Barika Barboza is forthcoming.
