DR. OVTCHARENKO STARTED his scientific career at the age of 16 while in high school, when he took part in his first scientific expedition with a local University and made his first regular spider collection. Later, he used these spiders in his Ph.D. dissertation as well. He grew up in a small town in southern Russia, in the Caucasus, a place with virgin nature and extremely diverse flora and fauna.

Dr. Ovtcharenko was awarded a M.Sc. degree at St. Petersburg State University where he concentrated on the study of spiders and published his first spider article. In 1983, he successfully defended his Ph.D. in the Zoological Institute of the Academy of Science. Dr. Ovtcharenko was Curator and Senior Scientist of the Zoological Institute until 1992. He was Research Scientist at the American Museum of Natural History (New York) from 1992 till 2004.

In fall 2004, Dr. Ovtcharenko was appointed as Assistant Professor at Hostos Community College. He is a well-known expert in spider taxonomy. He has given presentations at six International Arachnological Congresses, many European Arachnological Colloquia, and annual meetings of the American Arachnological Society. In 1992, Dr. Ovtcharenko was elected as a Vice President of the International Society of Arachnology. Also, he has traveled extensively to collect spiders in Asia, Africa, Australia, North and South America and Europe. He is the author of more than 60 research articles.
